Guinness Is Good For You

This past weekend, in lieu of traveling further than Dublin, a few of us explored the city once again.  Specifically, we traveled into the City Centre to see the Book of Kells and to tour the Guinness Factory.

Book of Kells:  "Turning Darkness into Light"

The book of Kells is located in Trinity College, and is an illuminated manuscript book written in Latin by celtic monks.  It contains the four Gospels of the New Testament and was written approximately 800 AD.

We departed Trinity, and left for the Guinness Factory.  It's located about 15 min by bus, or a 35 minute walk north of the City Centre. The building is designed to be different levels starting from the ground floor at basic raw materials ( hops, barley, water, and yeast) to the finished product on the top level (or gravity bar).  In the middle of the circular levels is a glass layer that extends all the way to the top of the structure.  This is meant to be the shape of a pint.

Velvet Wallpaper

I only have been in Ireland for 8 days, but it already feels like I have been here a month.

My week began with three classes on Monday- Fermented Foods, Diet and Health, and Labor Economics.  Fermented Foods is a small 4th level course composed of all graduating food science majors.  Like Penn State food science, all of the students know one another.  Food Science kids must be universally awesome, because they have all been incredibly accepting and patient with me.  We have already begun group work, so I am getting to know a few of them pretty well.  Currently, we are making a presentation on microbial metabolism in the brewing process.

Diet and Health is a pretty typical large lecture class. Most of the girls from Fermented Foods are in that class as well, so I have people to with whom to walk and sit. Econ was pretty dry, but I'm optimistic...

Monday was "Black Monday" (yes, there is a relation to MLK day, but it's what they call it...). It's basically an Irish day-long. Conveniently, there is a student  bar located on campus.  I got a Bulmers- a delicious hard cider-with a friend before Econ.  I have never been tipsy in class before, so it was an experience.

That night, we got a party bus to a nightclub called Alchemy in the City Centre.  One of the guys on my floor is a promoter there, so we were able to get in for half price.  The club was fun, but it was extremely crowded.  Black Monday is pretty popular.

I don't have any pictures from that night which is probably a good thing...hot. sweaty. mess.

Many of the pubs close early here, so we make it a point to hang out in someone's room after we get home.  This usually means none of us will go to sleep until after 4 or 5.  Sometimes this part of the night is more fun than being out in the city because we are able to talk to everyone rather than yelling over loud music.

Last night we went to a bar called the Porter House in Dublin. Later, we somehow ended up in a secret upstairs bar full of older people, also known as the VIP room. Let me make something clear: I LOVE old people; they are my bread and butter at the bars.  Needless to say, it was a successful night. I may have also gotten a job offer from a prominent businessman in the food science industry...it was grand.

Also worth mentioning, there was chandelier over the bar, and the wallpaper was 100% velvet ...total class.   We stopped at McDonald's for some snacks before heading home. Some things never change...

I'm drinking too much, not eating or sleeping enough, and am having more fun than I thought was possible.  A few times, as I am walking to class or to the store, I stop and try to take in every single detail; I love it here.

Field Trip to Howth

This morning a few other internationals from Blackrock and I took the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) to Howth-a small fishing Village located on a peninsula north of Dublin.

Shortly after arriving, we met up with other UCD students from the University of Illinois.  We began our search for a castle near the coast. Most notably, the trek included walking directly through a golf course, which apparently happens all the time, as none of the golfers so much as looked up as all 20 of us passed through the green.

After getting lost a few times as well as asking a few locals, we found the castle.

We then decided to hike up to the summit of the mountain located in the peninsula.  None of us were prepared for the level of wilderness/gradient which ensued:

We returned to the village to get some lunch.  All 20 of us got the "Haddock Meal" It was amazing

Fish n Chips
After lunch, we wandered around a Farmer's Market.  Naturally, I bought cupcakes

We had some time before the next train arrived, so we walked out onto the pier and got hot chocolates.

Howth is a city that seems untouched by time in some ways.  It's incredible to me that such a place is so easily accessible from the city.  After today's excursion, I am even more excited to discover the rest of Ireland.

First Days

It's been a full two days since my arrival to Dublin.  Before I delve into a full recap of the last 48 hours (maybe I'll tackle that tomorrow)   there are some things worth sharing immediately.

Unanticipated Observations:
  1. The Weather- It's WARM!!! Ireland is extremely mild compared to icy State College in January.  It has only rained once since I've arrived and it was what the locals call a "pleasant" or "happy" rain.  It mists a little but isn't a soaking rain. Today it's around 50F and sunny.  It's also extremely bright during the day, which surprised me. The only drawback- it gets dark around 5:30pm (half five)... the sunsets are breathtaking nonetheless.
  2. People really are that nice- Examples: My taxi driver walked into the UCD office with me in order to make sure I was in the right place. My RA carried my bags up a huge staircase (100 pounds of bags mind you).  A nice woman gave Bianca and I detailed directions to Forever 21 in downtown Dublin.  Everyone here wants to chat and to hear your story- where you're from, how you like Ireland so far. It is unbelievable.
  3. Drive on the left, walk on the left- Kind of obvious right?  It's silly but it's something that I have to get used to. While walking down the street or in a supermarket, one  must always walk on the left.  I'm getting better, but I didn't realize I was being rude until I ran into someone... lesson learned.
  4. Incentives- 15 cents for a packet of ketchup? one Euro to use a shopping cart? 22 cents for a plastic bag? Although these fees are negligible, it seems as though Ireland has figured out how to be less wasteful.  They are pesky, true, but it makes me ask myself if I really need a bag..if I really even need ketchup (gasp).  Using less isn't all that bad... and I plan on getting used to it.

Arrival:

Part of Campus- Blackrock was originally a convent

Entrance to my dorm

Residential area of Blackrock right outside campus limits

Once again, I find myself living in East Halls...

Exploring Dublin: Bianca and I had our own walking tour of the city.
